  11. Effective at 1100 UTC (7:00 a.m. EDT) on Wednesday, September 5,
  12. VOA will broadcast around the clock to the Middle East in Arabic
  13. and English.  Arabic broadcasts, already up to 9 3/4 hours per
  14. day from the normal 7 1/2, will increase to 13 hours a day. 
  15. Eleven hours of English broadcasts will complete the full
  16. schedule.

  18. Beginning September 5, a cooperative arrangement with the Board
  19. for International Broadcasting will enable the Voice of America
  20. to create a Middle East network.  Radio Free Europe will lend VOA
  21. transmitters in Gloria, Portugal for broadcasts to Eastern Europe
  22. and the Soviet Union.  This will free VOA transmitters in Germany
  23. and Greece to broadcast 24 hours a day exclusively to the Middle
  24. East.

  26. "People in the Middle East and around the world count on us for
  27. full and accurate news," said VOA Director Richard W. Carlson. 
  28. "In times of crisis we redouble our efforts to pierce the
  29. information barriers surrounding closed societies.  We are a
  30. lifeline to the world for people deprived of information."

  32. Iraq is now jamming VOA Arabic broadcasts to the Middle East with
  33. powerful 500 kilowatt transmitters.  VOA continues to broadcast
  34. radio signals over short- and medium-wave (AM) frequencies to the
  35. area, varying those frequencies to get information through the
  36. jamming.  To augment its direct radio broadcasts, VOA is using
  37. satellite audio channels made available by Worldnet, the United
  38. States Information Agency television service.  The audio signals
  39. can be received via satellite dishes in the region.  Along with
  40. expanded news programming, VOA is carrying U.S. Department of
  41. State advisories for Americans in Kuwait and Iraq.

  43. VOA also supplies news to radio stations and news organizations
  44. in the region through a constantly updated call-in news line.  In
  45. the three weeks since the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, there have
  46. been 6,500 telephone calls to that line.
